SHOW UP AND SPEAK UP

Effectively projecting confidence in your communication at your workplace

In the past few weeks, I have had numerous conversations with clients as to what is it that makes us an effective speaker? How can one project their confidence especially when your nerves are getting the better of you? Or when you need motivation to have that difficult conversation with your colleague or make that call to negotiate a good deal?

Here are my top tips on showing up at the workplace and communicating effectively!

TIP#1

Be assertive, not aggressive

In all honesty, it is difficult to get this one right because it is very easy for you to come across as aggressive and being aggressive should never be the way to communicate but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have a firm tone to your voice when speaking.

Being assertive is key to helping you through difficult conversations at the workplace. The thing to keep in mind is that you can be assertive while being emotionally engaged in the conversation too, you don’t have to be one or the other. Be genuinely interested and invested in the conversation.

Mini tip:  Just remember to smile and pause to listen to your colleague to ease the tension a bit.

TIP#2

Practice, present, repeat

Another way to increase confidence in communicating at the workplace is by jumping at each opportunity to volunteer for speaking roles at work. For example, introducing a new colleague to the team or volunteering for social projects. The more you practice public speaking, the easier it will be to find what works for you, such as your speaking style or preferred body language. Speaking in public helps you understand your style of speaking, your body language and makes you more at ease over time. That in turn helps you when you are up to have that chat with your manager or your client. Speaking up as often as possible helps you focus on your content because you are no more awkward about how you sound!

Mini tip- Showing up more at the workplace can improve your network and put you in front of the right people when it comes to progressing your career too.

TIP #3

Speak less, listen more

When discussing work with employees, it is vital to engage and ask questions. This helps others to trust that you are listening to them and hearing their opinion. By you engaging and letting their voice be heard, it will in turn help others to engage with you. Seeing others looking genuinely engaged helps boost confidence in your abilities to communicate as you are more sure that the message will be received by others. At the end of the day, in order to be an effective communicator, you must be a good listener.

Mini tip- Listen, listen, Listen!

eXAMPLE #4

Fake it till you make it? Maybe not!

I always encourage my clients to listen to and watch as many speakers share their stories as possible. Make notes of what you like about their style and think about what it is that you imagine yourself to look like when you are presenting?

With different speakers having different styles of public speaking, researching these speakers can help you to rule out what you think is not for you. You can adopt a few techniques and tailor them for your use at your workplace. The goal is that you will eventually start to be pushed out of your comfort zone and feel more comfortable being able to find your own style for how you can show up in your true self. An effective speaker is someone who has their own distinct style, their distinct personality so even it takes more practice, be yourself!

Mini tip- Be yourself because everyone else is taken!

Building your confidence and presenting with style is serious business and needs a great deal of work and practice. With the right techniques, tools and time, anyone can sparkle and be confident.
